On the occasion of my parents brief visit in this February we happened to visit Gangaikonda Cholapuram.. This is first one among the four destinations we visited in a row,Gangaikonda Cholapuram,Vaideeswaran Koil,Chidambaram and Tiruvannamalai (Arunachalam)..Chidambaram was long time due in our travel list, despite several times planning during our stay at Coimbatore,it doesn't work somehow..
On the first day of our trip,we took a cab from Chennai to Gangaikonda Cholapuram which is around 5 hours journey and reached the place before noon..The temple was clearly a replica of the gigantic Brihadeswarar Temple in Thanjavur..The architecture and sculptural beauty is so similar as it was built by the great Chola kings again..It was built by Rajendra Chola I,son of Rajaraja Chola and served as their capital city of Cholas from about 1025 AD...Now,the place is turned into a small village in the Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu and is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Here we go with the pictures..
