Rohtang Pass - The snow experience

We visited Rohtang pass in the first week of November...The fully snow covered pass on the Leh national high way is at 13,000 Ft. in Eastern Pir Panjal range of Himalayas...Easily reachable from Manali by road (52 kms)..You can hire a Cab to reach there, but make sure you start in the early hours lest there is a possibility of getting struck in the traffic on the dangerous Ghat road...We hired snow suits on the way to Rohtang pass...There are hundreds of shops in Manali on this purpose..We can choose them as per fitting..For kids also they have various suits depending on age...Rohtang pass is open from May-November depending upon the climatic conditions...Only Himachal vehicles are allowed here,if you go by your own vehicle, you need to hire a local cab to go there..We spent nearly 3 hours there, and returned before evening...

The Snow riders waiting for travelers...They charged 800 per couple to take us a bit nearer to the snow area..However Mules and Horses were there to hire.....

We are lucky, that day was a Sunny day..The friendly climate allowed us to stay there a bit longer..Above all,we had a good cup of coffee..:-)

Look at the vehicles..They look like toys..Isn't it ? Naturally getting down the pass will take a while because of the traffic....

Initially when you reach the spot, this is exactly what you see...You need to hire a horse or snow bike to reach the place where you have actual snow experience...

The snow-clad mountains are good, but the frozen waterfalls are awesome. Just imagine how fast temperature would have changed in order to freeze running water? OMG, I shiver even in Ooty. I don't think I can go to ice-clad mountains!

Beautiful pictures. We visited Rohtang in 2006. Didn't get to see this much snow, yet it was a very memorable drive and great place. The only not-so-pleasant thing were the the stinky snow suits. :)

Nice beautiful pictures and post on Rohtang pass. Its a very dangerous pass between Kullu Valley and the Lahaul and Spiti Valleys. Due to heavy snow and landslides, it remains closed hence the visitors should check the Rohtang Pass open status before planning a visit there.
