The more loving one

Was reading a poetry anthology and stumbled upon this beautiful poem by Auden on this winter morning. People usually want to be relevant either in society or in other's lives. They want people to remember them. But you know what !! Not being relevant is always good. It gives you a lot of space and freedom. Being relevant comes with rules, expectations. And you need to obey, follow and act according to those terms. It ties you down.

Einstein said it best, “If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things." Love them all. Give your love freely. But do not let them take you for  granted and never let them put you in a box. Whether they deserve it or not, be the more loving one :) Perhaps it is this essential message the poem is conveying.

The More Loving One By W. H. Auden - 1907-1973

Looking up at the stars, I know quite well
That, for all they care, I can go to hell,
But on earth indifference is the least
We have to dread from man or beast.

How should we like it were stars to burn
With a passion for us we could not return?
If equal affection cannot be,
Let the more loving one be me.

Admirer as I think I am
Of stars that do not give a damn,
I cannot, now I see them, say
I missed one terribly all day.

Were all stars to disappear or die,
I should learn to look at an empty sky
And feel its total dark sublime,
Though this might take me a little time.
